Messrs David Gurupatham & Koay says Jinan office now open as first Malaysian law firm in mainland China

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 25): Messrs David Gurupatham & Koay (DGK) became the first Malaysian law firm to open a legal office in mainland China after opening a branch in Shandong province last week.

The firm, occupying a 1,500 square foot office on the 11th floor of the China Life Insurance building in Jinan, can now accept customers following authorisation from the Chinese Judicial Department last May, according to a statement.

The firm hopes to serve Malaysian and Chinese companies seeking opportunities to invest in both countries with centuries of strong trade and cultural ties.

Datuk David Gurupatham, the founding partner and managing director of DGK, said he is optimistic that both nations are poised for growth in sectors including manufacturing, digital economy, green development, following a rise in tourism and cultural exchange activities.

China has been Malaysia’s biggest trading partner for more than a decade now, with bilateral trade totalling some RM484 billion in 2024. Shipments to China made up 12% of Malaysia’s exports while China is the biggest source of imports for Malaysia, accounting for about 15% of inbound deliveries.

The establishment of the office is a major milestone for a home-grown legal firm founded more than 20 years ago, said DGK’s senior partner Koay Eng Hooi. “Suffice to say, we are looking forward to serving our clients in China,” he added.

In Jinan, DGK is offering legal services including in corporate and commercial law, banking and finance, construction and real estate, intellectual property, dispute resolution, international arbitration, employment law and family law.
